About US import landed cost
- What is landed cost?
- Landed cost is the all-in cost of getting imported goods to your door: the goods themselves plus freight, insurance, customs duty, CBP user fees (MPF and HMF) and broker/bond fees. It’s the number you need to price a product and compare suppliers.
- Why do I enter the duty rate myself?
- US duty depends on your HTS classification plus any Section 301 (China), Section 232 (steel/aluminum) and other tariffs, which change often. We don’t auto-look-up a rate, because a stale or base-only number would understate your real duty. Get your rate from the US HTS or your customs broker and enter it.
- What are MPF and HMF?
- The Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF) is 0.3464% of the customs value, subject to a minimum and maximum that CBP adjusts each October. The Harbor Maintenance Fee (HMF) is 0.125% of the value and applies only to ocean (vessel) imports. Both are charged on the customs value, not the freight.
- Is duty charged on the freight too?
- Generally no. US customs value is usually the transaction (FOB) price of the goods, so duty, MPF and HMF are on the goods value — not the international freight. Freight and insurance still count toward your landed cost.
- Is it free and accurate?
- Free, and it runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. It’s an estimate for planning; confirm the final duty and fees with your customs broker before you file.
